Summer moving right along...

Summer has been moving right along for us here at Kelley Insurance. The summer festival was a great success. We had a lot of fun handing out goody bags along with some goodies at the everson parade. The weather was and still is perfect. We recently got awarded the HK Dent award from Safeco/Liberty Northwest insurance company as shown in the picture. Marcus Tucker on the left and Harlan Kelley on the right. The Kelley Insurance Team is proud to announce we are here to protect your financial future today!

Summer Safety Hints

Now that summer's in full swing, it's a good time to get your backyards in shape for the season's get-togethers and activities.

Inspect your play area - Your backyard swing set and other playground equipment should have plenty of shock-absorbing materials-such as wood chips or sand-underneath and on the perimeter. Replenish those materials if they look skimpy.

De-clutter - Put away toys, tools and lawn equipment.

Clean before cooking - Before firing it up, give your grill and its grates a good cleaning with soapy water. Invest in extra protection - Buy a grill pad or splatter mat to place under your grill. These naturally heat-resistant pads made of composite cement or plastic will catch grease that misses the drip pan and help prevent a flare-up.

Enjoy your summer & be safe!

Summer is Here!

I think we were afraid that summer would never come to Whatcom County. It actually did yesterday, only a day late...............

Be extra careful to look out for children playing, people riding bikes, motorcycles, walking & crossing streets.

Look over your insurance policies to make sure you have all of your summer "toys" covered. If you are not sure, call us for a policy review.

Bike Commuting

This morning started with a brisk ride to work in the 40 degree overcast weather that left me wanting just to hang on to my morning cup of coffee rather than drink it. Now I am looking forward to my commute home as the temperature outside has warmed considerably and the sun is out. Woohoo. Enjoy your weekend, be safe and have fun.

Everybody Bike

Tomorrow is National Bike-to-work day and I at am proud that Kelley Insurance will be participating. This means an early departure from the house tomorrow morning; about 7:15 for myself, that is if I want to make it to work on time. No harm from an early rise of course, it will bring a new appreciation for the fresh morning air as I enjoy it from the seat of my bicycle instead of my car. Indeed the bicycle is a superior tool of transportation. Bicycles definitely occupy less space than our clunky cars do...We could fit enough bicycles in one parking spot to commute everyone in our office to and the office. Aside from the space we would save we would all get healthier while taking care of our exercise for the day. Maybe giving up the car and biking to work every day wouldn't be such a hard task to cope with.

Customer Appreciation Event - Friday afternoon, May 7, between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m. here on the agency parking lot in downtown Everson. Our customers are the most important person in our business, we are dependent upon them. They are not the interruption of our work, but the purpose of it. Our responsibility is to treat that person, or business, with our utmost respect, as we assist with their insurance needs and wants, filling them with our highest and best attainable service. Our customers are the lifeblood of our agency - and we will entertain them, honor them, gift them, and enjoy their presence for the short two hours they spend in our midst at our annual "Customer Appreciation Celebration," celebrating our good fortune to have CUSTOMERS!

Be Prepared - should you unfortunately be involved in an auto accident, an incident, or even a witness at the scene, carry paperwork in your vehicle, together with a pen or pencil to jot down the pertinent details. You should be able to write names, addresses, telephone numbers, information on the insurance on the vehicle, or vehicles involved. This all sounds so elementary - but it is surprising the scribble notes we see on all sorts of writing materials......It is good to be able to draw a simple diagram and log in details of the responding authorities, the report or case #, which it also vital information. Like the Boy Scouts moto, "be prepared."

A word to the wise: carry your auto ID card IN YOUR VEHICLE, in addition to your auto registration form. Be sure to also have your driver's license readily available should you be stopped or detained for ANY REASON. It is surprising the number of folks who don't have their ID card for that insurance policy term, nor do they have on their person, their driver's license. These three items are MANDATORY at the scene of an accident, at a traffic stop, or any other auto-related incident -no one wants to be cited for lack of any of these items...we have card-holders for just this purpose - come see us!

"SAFETY FIRST" - a GOOD idea whether we're driving our vehicles, working at home or in our place of employment. Just by following a few well-known pointers, the difference between a safe trip and a serioius injury or death, are but a "heartbeat" away. Use your seat belt (and be sure all passengers do so also); refrain from using your cel phone (and texting is a well-known no-no while driving). If you MUST talk on your cel, pull over to the shoulder, get out of the traffic lane, to give your caller your full attention. Child restraint seats need to be properly installed and maintained to insure the well-being of our most precious passengers - our little ones. Drive with your lights on, conscientiously observe the posted speed limit, and be willing to drive SLOWER than the limit in impaired weather conditions. Remember, a few extra minutes might mean the difference between and life and death situation - your own and that of others.

Here we are - Friday, April 30, 2010. The last day of the month, with many Spring events happening in our beautiful Whatcom County this weekend. A drive around the surrounding area reveals quite a display of flowering shrubs, blooming flowers, green, green lawns - I agree with the previous "post" or two - it is a "gift" to live here. We here at Kelley Insurance Agency are very much aware of our many blessings; we are grateful for the continued opportunity to serve the insurance needs of our customers, and look forward to the opportunity to help new customers, especially the newcomers arriving here in Whatcom County - to you, welcome! Give us a call. We offer a wide variety of insurance and financial products at the most affordable pricing in the marketplace today - we're here for you! Enjoy Spring!

Today is a gift, that is why it is called the “Present”.

One of the most important reasons to buy life insurance is to provide your family with financial security tomorrow. Would you as the surviving spouse be able to pay the mortgage or rent? What about the monthly utilities, day care and groceries. Even a policy with as little as $10,000 would cover "final Expenses"

It’s something you don’t want to talk about or feel it is necessary because you are young. Actually it’s the best time. Term life is inexpensive, especially if you are young and healthy. It lasts through the term and amount of coverage you choose, up to 30 years (depending on your age & health).

Give us a call– it takes a couple of minutes of your life today.

Personal Umbrella Protection

This is another policy available which provides an additional layer of protection over and above your underlying Homeowner and/or auto policies.

Also, several carriers will now include this "excess" protection against under-insured motorist coverage in their Personal Umbrella form.

If you are a Business Owner, you would need a Commercial Umbrella or Excess Policy.

Give us a call for a free quote and complete coverage review.

Why do people by umbrellas?

A commuter walked past a store every day with a sign in the window: Umbrellas—$3.00. One very rainy day this commuter discovered she had left her umbrella at home, so she stepped into that store. She was surprised to learn that the store was out of umbrellas. The moral of this story is that it is best to buy an umbrella before it is needed. Afterwards, it is too late.
People who expect never to have an accident make sure their cars have airbags. People who do not expect to have a fire buy fire extinguishers and smoke detectors. If this makes sense, it also makes sense for the people who do not expect a large liability claim to buy umbrella insurance.

Anybody developing a financial plan is concerned with building and/or preserving his or her financial assets. Liability insurance is a very important tool in protecting one’s assets. The high limits available in a personal umbrella policy help ensure that a lifetime of savings will not be lost through a moment of carelessness that results in a liability claim.

Be prepared. Call us today 966-3732.

What about your Protection?

What about you?

Liability is protection for accidents you, a family member or authorized driver is responsible for.
Underinsured motorist pays for medical expense, lost wages and other damages when you, a family member, passenger of your car or an authorized driver are injured in an accident caused by a driver who does not have enough insurance, or none at all. This is another reason you should consider increasing your limits, the maximum limit you can have is equal to your liability limits.

Auto Insurance is primary over Medical Insurance. The auto liability payments do not have limitations on what doctors you see or how much therapy or rehabilitation will be paid for. Medical Insurance is a contract and it dictates how, when and what treatments and limits will be paid.

PIP (personal injury protection) with limits of $10,000 or $35,000 is available. This coverage to cover you or your passengers injured is an auto accident. This protection is for at-fault or not at-fault accidents.
Some of the expenses this coverage will pay for are medical expenses, income continuation, household services and funeral expenses. This coverage pays out first.

Call or stop by if you have questions on how to better protect yourself and your family.

How Much Insurance is Enough?

Most people purchase auto insurance because is it the law and because they want protection for their family and personal assets.

Washington Auto Insurance Requirements are:

$25,000 for bodily injury expenses, per person
$50,000 for combined bodily injury expenses (maximum)
$10,000 for damage to another person’s property

Liability pays for bodily injury and property damage the at-fault driver causes. When the claim exceeds your policy limits, you are responsible for paying “out of pocket” the amount left unpaid after the insurance company settles the claim.

For a relatively small premium you can increase your limit of protection. The next liability level is $50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident. Also available are “Combined” limits starting at $100,000. Combined single limit policies do not dictate a limit per person.
With the increased costs of Hospital and Medical care, you should consider increasing your current liability limits. Give us a call for an increased limit quote and policy review today!

Mount Baker High School Mock DUI Exercise

Hello Friends at Kelley Insurance Agency,
Forgive me for the skipped blog day yesterday... WE were preoccupied with two delta grade emergency responses for Whatcom County Fire District #1 in the afternoon, morning meetings left no time for blogging...
So we are Back... Yesterday I had a great Phone conversation with Mount Baker High School Principal King... who filled me in on the overall outcome of the two day exercise... Ending with the Trial of the Drunken Driver. Unfortunately I was unable to attend... With Mr. Kings undaunting enthusiasm and informative phone call I feel like we really made a difference educating our next generation of drivers. Today They all understand why we need to consistently make good choices and while making choices we need to have the fore thought to recognize the consequences. The Driver received the Maximum Sentence Plus the Maximum Fines... Carried with him for the rest of his life.
Think about how lucky we are to be here on "Earth Day 2010" Alive.

Every aspect of a real life catastrophe were played out in a mere 40 minute exercise. Students actors were prepared with real looking moulage... and prompted in the facts of accident scene reality... and did they ever do a fantastic job of acting out the trauma and drama of a real life fatality auto accident... followed up with law enforcement and real life consequences.... Tomorrow on to the Court room and Trial of the guilty parties.

Flood Insurance

According to FEMA, flooding causes billions of dollars of property damage in the United States each year. If you are like many homeowners, however, you may be unaware that the standard homeowners insurance policy you buy does not cover flood losses. You may believe that you have a low risk to this peril, but FEMA reports that approximately 33 percent of all flood claims occur in communities in which flooding is deemed to be a low to moderate risk. So do you really need a separate flood policy? The following tips and ideas may prove helpful in answering this question.

Find out if you live in a community that participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), a prerequisite to qualify for Flood Insurance. Participating communities must agree to adopt and enforce certain floodplain management regulations, including building construction and zoning laws that minimize the risks of flood damage.
Go to www.floodsmart.gov and select "What's Your Flood Risk?" Enter your home address and this Web site will tell you whether you are in a low-, moderate-, or high-risk area.
Consider purchasing Flood Insurance even if you are in a low-to moderate-risk community. In these areas, you may be eligible for the Preferred Risk Policy, with premiums as low as $112 per year including coverage for your personal property.

Note that a flood policy does not take effect until 30 days after you purchase the coverage. Thus, trying to purchase coverage after the local meteorologist announces a flood alert for your community won't work.

Don't assume that the government will bail you out if you suffer a flood loss and don't have a Flood Insurance policy. That decision is a gamble you may not win. Remember that federal disaster assistance, if available, is usually a loan that must be paid back with interest.

Frequently Asked questions on the health care reform

Many have called us to ask how health care reform would affect them. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions.

Is it true that everyone has to buy health insurance?
Not until 2014. All Americans will be required to obtain coverage or face an annual penalty starting in 2014. The initial penalty will be $95. By 2016, the penalty will be the greater of two alternatives: a flat fee of $695 or 2.5% of income. There is an exemption for low-income people.

Do carriers have to accept everyone now?
The big changes in the law - the ones that could affect tens of millions of people - don't kick in until 2014. Those include insurance marketplaces called "exchanges"; rules requiring carriers to accept all applicants; and an expansion of state Medicaid programs.

I own a small business. Am I now required to provide health insurance for my employees?
Businesses that do not provide coverage will be assessed a $2,000 per-employee fee starting in 2014. The fee will be assessed on the company's entire workforce, minus an allowance. Companies with 50 or fewer workers are exempt from the requirement. A small-business tax credit will be available to help provide coverage for workers.

Does this mean we have a government-run plan?
No. Starting in 2014, people purchasing coverage through the exchanges will have the option of signing up for national plans overseen by the same federal office that manages the health plans available to members of Congress.

I am sure there is more to come as we get closer to the starting date in 2014. Hope you all have a nice safe weekend.

Personal Injury Protection...are you adequately insured?

Have you ever wondered if your personal auto insurance would cover you or your passengers in the event of an accident? If you have personal injury protection on your policy, also known as PIP, then you are in fact covered.

Basic PIP covers $10,000 for medical expenses per person while riding in a covered automobile if an accident were to occur. However, with the rising cost of medical care, are you adequately insured?

We recoment extended PIP to better protect you and your passengers. Purhcasing this additonal coverage would provide you with the following...
  • Up to$35,000 per person in the vehicle for medical expenses incurred within 3 years of the accident regardless of fault
  • Up to $2,000 in funeral expenses
  • Income continuation
  • Loss of services benefits for up to one year

Keep in mind that $35,000 is the maximum that will be covered per person for any combination of covered expenses.

Ease your mind by making sure that you and your loved ones are properly covered. You'd be surpised at how affordable this increased coverage is. Give us a call for a free quote! 360-966-3732.

Until next time...

The rain is back, and the roads are wet again. Drive Carefully..

It is Thursday morning, and boy is the rain ever back! As I ventured out to work this morning, I couldn't help but notice that the roads are very wet once again. We all know, that when the roads have been dry for a while, and then get rained on, they become extra slick. I would just like to ask that you please drive very carefully. I would hate to see anyone injured in an addcident that could have been avoided by just decreasing your speed a little bit.
That leads me to this one very important fact about Auto Insurance. Just incase you are not aware, there is a protection available to you, in the unfortunate event of an accident with injuries that require medical attention for anyone in your vehicle. It is called Personal Injury Protection, or PIP. You can purchase $10,000 in protection, or for just a little bit more, you can bump it up to $35,000 in protection. For the minimal premium involved, this is is a must have endorsement to your auto policy. Please do not hesitate to call on us should you have any questions, or would like to add this to your current auto policy. Remember, we are here for you 24/7. Take care.

If not you, who will protect the future of the ones you love?

As I am sitting here looking back on the last year or so, it becomes ever so real that time truly does continue to march on. My two beautiful children have grown up, and made lives for themselves now. It is hard to believe that my son, who is serving in the Air Force is 22 years old, and that my daughter, who is 25 has a family of her own. Watching her with her baby daughter Kaehlyn(My Grand Daughter) of 10 months old, reminds me of the importance of looking to the future, and protecting the ones you love. Which by the way, brings me to a subject that can be a very personal subject indeed. Life Insurance..... Don't wait until (God forbid) a tragedy hits, before you start thinking about Life Insurance. It is then that people begin to question themselves, and the could have, would have, should haves begin to surface. Take a look at it now. You would be greatly surprised at just how affordable it can be. There are many different options available to you when it comes to this all important protection. Here is a brief overview, and a few examples of different types of policies that are available to you. This may aid in your search for just the right protection plan for you and your loved ones. Please do let us know if we can be of assistance to you as well. We are here for you 24/7.

1) Term Life Insurance:

A fixed rate policy with no cash value, which provides protection for a specific period of time (eg 20 years). If your alive when the term ends, there is no payout. This is usually the least expensive type of life insurance.

2)Universal Life Insurance:

A flexible policy, in which the cost of the premium, the savings value, and the coverage can change as your needs change.

3) Whole Life Insurance:

Combines life insurance with a savings plan, so it builds up cash value within the the policy. Premiums are fixed, and the policy remains in force as long as you continue paying your premiums.

Oh, and by the way, what a better place to come to acquire it, then from your Friends at Kelley Insurance. Get out there and enjoy yourself, but do it with the peace of mind that you, and all your toys are well protected.

Happy Trails

Kelley Insurance Agency is also licensed in California

It is Monday morning, and we are all back at work. What a beautiful first day of Spring on Saturday!! I hope you all got a chance to get outside. My Husband and I took our Motorcyles over to Deception Pass and watched a whale swimming just off shore. I was so wonderful. Reminded me a great deal of Nothern California. Speaking of California... Here are some interesting facts for you in regards to Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Protection in California. Don't get caught without proper protection...

California auto insurance offers drivers the opportunity to purchase protection against uninsured mortorists, with uninsured motorist property damage coverage. You automatically have uninsured motorist coverage for your bodily injuries, but not for damage to your vehicle. Here are a few tips in regards to this all important protection:

1) Good News!! If you have collision coverage with you vehicle, you have a $0 deductible according to California auto insurance laws, and the limit of your repairs is the actual cash value of your car. If you do not have collision coverage, but do have UMPD, your deductible is still $0, but the limit for repairs or replacement is $3500.

2)California auto insurance law requires that you make impact with the uninsured vehicle to qualify for UMPD coverage. So, if you are forced from the road by another vehicle, but never make impact with them, according to California auto insurance law, you do not qualify for UMPD.

3) It is imparitive that you understand that most California auto insurance policies do not automatically include UMPD. You must inform your agent that you want the coverage, and your agent will make an "endorsement" to your coverage to add it.

4)And last, but not least.... California auto insurance laws do not require that you have a police report to qualify for UMPD. However, you must either identify the other party, or have their license plate number to qualify for California auto insurance UMPD.

Be safe out there, and keep us in mind for all of your Insurance, (Protection) needs.

FRIDAY

Tomorrow's the day, the first day of Spring! I can hear the children playing in the park outside my open office window. The multi colors of greens budding out of trees and the bright colors of blooming flowers can't help but make one feel happy. Spring always seems to offer hopefullness and new beginnings. I hope that you have a moment to be outside and raise you face to the sun and feel a cool spring breeze pass over you. Whatcom County is a wonderful place to be.

Auto Insurance: "I just want to buy the minimum on my car." If you own anything (car, pickup truck, money in the bank, a home, or any tangible property), your assets are in jeopardy with the "minimum." Should you be responsible for, or cause injury or damage that YOU are liable for, your $25,000 bodily injury liability per person/$50,000 bodily injury liability per accident, is just not adequate. Further, your $10,000 property damage liability won't be enough to repair/replace most vehicles on the road today. Imagine being responsible for damage to a Lexus, BMW, Cadillac - or even a newer FORD! The $10,000 limit is not going to do the job. With inadequate liability limits, the policyholder is responsible for that amount over and above your insurance limits. Horrors! The more assets you have, the more you jeopardize those assets with "minimum" auto liability insurance. Let the professionals at Kelley Insurance Agency advise you - we're in the business to Protect Your Financial Future TODAY!

Thursday, March 11, 2010

A word from the "claims desk:" Very basically and broadly, insurance claims are described as "sudden," or "accidental," (a tree falls on your home - "suddenly;" your hot water tank bursts, sending water throughout your home, "suddenly.") You "accidentally" hit the garage with your car, or rearend the vehicle ahead, unable to stop in time in a line of traffic. We see insurance coverage questions on wet rot, dry rot, carpenter ants - nothing too "sudden" or "accidental" about these. Your insurance policy is in place to "indemnify" you, to put you and your home or vehicle back to its condition prior to the incident. Our work here is to gather the facts, as you know them to be, report them promptly and completely to the insurance company - a job we take very seriously. AUTO INSURANCE and the Young Driver: The "Good Student Discount" has MAJOR impact on rates, pricing, and premiums for the youthful driver in the household. This discount amounts to 15-20% reduction in insurance costs for our highest rated, most expensive class of drivers. The requirement is a "B" average, or better, and/or 3.00 gpa, or better. When a youthful operater on a driver's permit is about to become licensed, it is imperative to reach this threshold for the best pricing on the family auto insurance. Are the "smart kids" better drivers? Certainly not - but they are home studying more often, than out in the family vehicles with the potential of driving incidents/accidents. "Good Student Discount" - we recommend it highly!

Service - Service - Service - In our business, service is not ONE thing, it's EVERYTHING!Consult the insurance professionals at Kelley Insurance Agency for expert assistance in EVERY line of insurance - we do it all!
Here we are - early March - but we're still not finished with "winter," a time when auxiliary heating sources are still in use: woodstoves, fireplaces, propane stoves. Our recommendation here from "downtown Everson:" if you are a TENANT in an apartment, duplex, single family home, BUY RENTER'S INSURANCE! Is there a worse scene than tenants standing in the street, watching their home's fire being fought by the firemen, knowing full well, all their belongings in this world are now lost - all while wrapped in a "borrowed blanket." Don't let this happen to you! Renter's policies are generally $20,000 insurance on household goods and personal property, or more, annual premiums run from approximately $80 to $120., depending on the location, and a few "insurance details." A GOOD insurance buy.,....don't go without it! Give us a call for our professional help!

Earth Quake Safety Facts
Fact #3) Wooden Buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during an earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake. If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created. Also, the wooden building has less concentrated crushing weight. Brick buildings will break into individual bricks... Bricks will cause many injuries but less squashed bodies than concrete slabs. Concrete slab buildings are the most dangerous during an earthquake.

Earth Quake Safety Review

2) Cats, Dogs and Babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position. You should too in an earthquake. It is natural safety/survival instinct. That position helps you survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to a sofa, next to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it.

Earth Quake Safety Ideas

1) Almost Everyone who simply "ducks and covers" when the buildings collapse ARE CRUSHED TO DEATH. People who get under objects, like desks and cars, are crushed.
